To become successful online today, attract new customers and grow your brand you need to showcase your expertise and become the authority in your niche or industry.
If you have been in business for a while you've probably already built up trust, credibility and some degree of authority amongst your client base, the problem is outside the four walls of your office no-one really knows who you are or aware of the level of experience and expertise you have.
To them you are no different to the young start up that has just gone out on their own for the first time.
The quicker your customers and local community percieve you as the "authority or go to business" in your industry the quicker you will be able to attract more clients and grow your business. Here are 5 tips on how you can build authority in your niche FAST.
1. Prove Your Expertise
Don't just claim you're an expert in your industry. You'll need to be able to prove it through unique, relevant and authoritative content. If your website features rehashed content that looks like it's just been copied and pasted from some get-rich-quick digital marketing package, both Google and your target audience will ignore you. To succeed in the highly competitive online world, you'll need to find your focus and write only about the things you know and love.
2. Let Others Promote You
Every business indulges in some self-promotion. However, in the days of social media and online reviews, the world of marketing has changed beyond recognition. The pressure on businesses and entrepreneurs to blow people's minds with top-quality content is enormous, and there's now far less space for purely promotional content. Quality content will encourage interaction and feedback, thus helping you to establish yourself as a thought leader.
3. Be Sociable
An active social presence is an absolute must, given that today's consumers often make purchases based on what they read about you on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+ and other social platforms. The Web is no place for a one-sided approach, and modern digital marketing is heavily reliant on the social element. However, being a part of the conversation is not enough and, to truly succeed, you'll need to lead the conversation by bringing up topics that no one else is talking about.
To become a thought leader and authority in your niche you need to use all the social media channels to distribute your content.
4. Build Your Google Brand
Google is the number 1 search engine in the world and the place where most people go to find information on local businesses, products, services and YOU. If someone Google's your name and they only find one or two websites with your name mentioned then your percieved authority in your industry will not be that great.
You need to build content, create websites and distribute content to other websites so that when someone Google's your name there are pages and pages of websites with your name mentioned. Example: Go to Google and type in "David Lurie SEO" , you will see pages of websites with my name mentioned. This gives the impression that I must be reasonably good at online marketing and SEO, therefore my perceived authority in my niche or industry is high.
5. Show Your Passion
You don't need to be the greatest expert in your industry to succeed, and the whole experience will be a constant learning curve. However, while a degree of expertise is a must, having a genuine passion for what you do is even more important. Whether you're creating an infographic, publishing a video on YouTube or writing a blog post, you need to be able to show off your passion and love what you do. If you don't show you love what you do, then people will less likely become engaged in what you do.
